CORONA VIRUS AND THE SPANISH FLU OF 1918
The 1917 – 1918 influenza epidemic swept across the world bringing death and fear to homes in every land. In 1918 almost nothing was known about prevention, or cure of influenza. Out of this epidemic grew the new science of Chiropractic. In fact, the Spanish Flu is what put chiropractic “on the map.” Why? Chiropractors got fantastic results with influenza patients while those under medical care died at alarming rates. In fact, chiropractic “hospitals” sprouted up to help treat and prevent the flu.
Nationally, chiropractors treated 46,394 patients with a death rate of only .1%. Comparably, the death rate of those treated by conventional medicine was 9.5%.
In the state of Iowa for example, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths – a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases.
The publicity and reputation of such effectiveness in handling flu cases also brought new patients and much acclaim from people who knew nothing of chiropractic before 1918. Chiropractic was thrust into the mainstream from this epidemic. The scientific evidence demonstrating the positive effects of the adjustment on the IMMUNE SYSTEM is profound.
