Long Live the 1980’s

Big bangs, denim jackets and yes…heavy metal rock ballads!  This week I set the radio to a 1980’s station and the song “Don’t Know What You’ve Got Til’ it’s Gone” by Cinderella came on.  Got me thinking about our health and how we REALLY don’t value it until it’s gone.  If you are the PROACTIVE type, and are willing to take steps to PRESERVE health before it is gone, consider this.

#1  Poor posture is DIRECTLY RELATED to heart and lung disease. A ground-breaking study in 2004 published in the American Journal of Geriatrics found that individuals with forward head posture (misalignment of the neck) had a 44% higher risk of death than their peers with normal spinal alignment.

#2  90% of INFANTS and CHILDREN were found to have significant subluxation (misalignments) of the upper cervical spine in a study of over 1000 asymptomatic children. The study was Published in Manual Medicine in 1992.

#3  In 2010 the research journal Chiropractic & Osteopathy found that a chiropractic adjustment significantly increases a substance in the body called INTERLEUKIN-2. Interleukin-2 is a powerful immune system modulator. In fact, it is commonly given to cancer and AIDS patients to boost their immune function…shots can cost between $15,000 – $20,000 each! Chiropractic care raises Interleukin-2 naturally.

Let’s Talk About Sex

Throughout my career, I have witnessed many things.  Some were totally unexpected.  As a doctor of chiropractic I am accustomed to patients returning after the first, second or third visit reporting that they are feeling much better and having less pain.  I also have come to expect related things like improved eyesight, balance, breathing, digestion, athletic performance, and many other things.

HOWEVER, early on in my career I began to receive other reports that, at first, were quite shocking – reports of improved SEXUAL FUNCTION.  It started inconspicuously enough when thankful spouses began attending visits with partners who had begun chiropractic care.  They each would smile and begin a conversation with me that went something like, “Doc, I don’t know what you did to my wife/husband, but please keep doing it!”

It seems that adjusting the lower back and hips achieves more results in some people than just symptom relief – UHHUUMM!  I have also had women tell me on many occasions that menstrual cycles were less difficult, pelvic motion was better and they were able to conceive after years of being unsuccessful.

Let’s break it down into simple terms and logical explanations, shall we?

When discussing sexual function I think it’s appropriate to start with the PELVIC region, since this is where our sexual organs lie. The PELVIS is a bony structure made up of three bones, the ilium, ischium and pubis.  The pelvic joints can get stuck, chiropractors call that a SUBLUXATION, causing lack of movement, inflammation, muscle spasms, bio-mechanical dysfunction and pain.

SACRAL subluxation is one of the most common causes of low back pain.  The sacrum has an intricate network of nerves that branch off the spinal cord and innervates (controls) many muscles of the buttocks and legs, as well as the bladder and sexual organs.  Sexual sensations are processed by the nerves of the sacral plexus.

We all know that when our partner says he or she has a “headache” it’s another way of saying, “not tonight.”  But when it’s back pain they claim, they are probably not faking it.  Low back pain can cause even the most passionate Casanovas to take a rain check.  In addition, problems with the lower back can cause all kinds of maladies from SCIATICA, IMPOTENCE and SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION.  If you don’t have lower back issues, consider yourself lucky.  If you do, then you and I both know what might not be happening tonight!

Hunched and FATIGUED

You’ve seen these people at the store, at work or even in your own mirror…the person starting to develop that HUNCHBACK with rounded shoulders.  In addition to poor posture and an awkward appearance, there is another common denominator, FATIGUE.

When the spine is hunched, it puts significant pressure on the spinal nerves that supply energy to the lungs.  When these nerves are obstructed by misaligned vertebrae, less energy is getting from the brain to the lungs, and as a result there is less oxygen flowing throughout your body.  In addition, when our spine is hunched we breathe shallowly and therefore take in less oxygen which can be used for energy.

The good news is research is showing that specific chiropractic care can reverse this hunching and not only improve appearance but increase energy levels dramatically.  A proper postural analysis, computerized infared thermography and digital x-rays are all tools available to analyze the spine and help direct customized correction.

Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto noticed that 80% of the peas harvested from his garden came from 20% of the pea pods.  This came to be known as the Pareto Effect; 80% of our RESULTS come from 20% of our EFFORTS.  Take the time to sit quietly, examine life and carve out what doesn’t work and spend time making that which DOES work…work BETTER.

Bad Emotions

MOTIONS are the precursors of EMOTIONS. If you aren’t happy with your emotions, take a look at your motions.

Rituals ignite action.  Action extinguishes fear.  Getting started is typically the trick to getting ahead.
